Expressive Arts Therapy
Taichung has a large population but due to the relatively uneven distribution of medical resources for early intervention, its promotion of early intervention has lagged far behind Taipei. According to data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of children with developmental delay stands at 6-8 percent, and thus there will be 2,500 to 3,000 births of slow children per year in Taichung. In the face of such huge medical, educational, and social demand, the Hospital, as a member of the medical system in the central region, has devoted itself to early intervention since 1999. It aims to provide integrated medical services and social resources for developmentally delayed children and their families, and to realize the ideal of community medical services. Expressive arts therapy includes art therapy and music therapy, a comprehensive medical specialty combining multiple art media and medicine. Art (artwork /music creation) is the creative instinct in everyone. A case explores his/her own voice in a safe and trusting therapeutic context built by a qualified therapist and expresses himself/herself nonverbally or verbally. Living experience is brought up through artistic sensory experience, delving into inner conflicts in the subconscious and using creative art music creation to increase the ability to solve external problems to achieve therapeutic results in the creative treatment space. Music therapy is a health promotion specialty that combines music with psychotherapy. Music is everyone's innate and instinctive creativity. Individual cases find out their own voices in safe and trusting therapeutic situations established by qualified music therapists, and express themselves nonverbally or verbally. Music creation is the language of children's self-expression. Creative music expression can enhance children's flexibility, autonomy, and psychological growth. The therapist uses various music elements to help the cases meet physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive, and social needs by singing games, playing instruments, music-assisted relaxation techniques, and improvisation. According to scientific research, music can facilitate the development of the central nervous system. Music therapy can organize and guide individual cases to expand sensory perception, express emotions and integrate ideas, enhance self-intrinsic resilience and increase external problem-solving ability, thereby improving the quality of life. Art therapy: Art therapy is psychological therapy through art media. Under the guidance of a therapist, art therapy provides non-threatening, non-verbal expression opportunities for the people concerned to integrate naturally and establish a good relationship with the things around them. Personal development, emotion, personality, potential and subconscious are explored and understood through creative activities, and dealt with and solved. Through the process of art therapy, individual emotions can be released and relieved, while promoting the improvement of sensory integration, concentration, observation, communication and expression, and emotional behavior, or becoming one of the long- and short-term psychological rehabilitation methods. In addition, the work of art therapy also serves as a diagnostic indicator. Therapists can assess the development of cases through most of their work to make its treatment process and effectiveness more complete.
