Before the establishment of an independent division of pediatric cardiac surgery in Children's Hospital, the Hospital's medical and teaching services concerning cardiac surgery were supported and helped by China Medical University Hospital’s Division of Cardiac Surgery. The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is an important place for open-heart operations for congenital heart disease and the only medical center for performing complex congenital heart surgery in central Taiwan. The types of congenital heart disease can be classified into cyanosis, non-cyanosis, and obstructive heart disease according to clinical manifestations. A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases. Clinically, there is a significant relationship between the symptoms of the patient and the size of the VSD, but in about 60 percent of patients, the VSD may gradually narrow or close within six to 12 months. Therefore, as to whether and when patients should receive an operation, our surgeon will make an overall assessment according to the size of the VSD, the age of the child, and the clinical symptoms.
