Childhood myopia is a form of short-sightedness that develops from childhood. Myopia usually increases at a rate of about 1.00 diopters per year until adolescence. Strabismus is a condition in which the eyeballs are not normally aligned on a parallel line and may be crossed or one eye may be tilted to one side. Normal newborns can sometimes have crossed or misaligned eyes, especially when they are tired. If a child is more than three months old and still has crossed or misaligned eyes (even if occasionally), or has monocular fixation with a head tilt, please inform the physician for evaluation. Amblyopia is often caused by blurred vision or interlaced vision. The first few years after birth are an important period of visual development, and when the brain's visual system is complete between the ages of eight and 10, vision will not continue to develop. The Division provides detailed consultation and treatment for children with eye diseases and visual problems.
