Overview
The mission of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology is to provide exemplary evidence-based, multidisciplinary care to the most medically vulnerable children in the middle Taiwan area and beyond. In addition to our excellent clinical care, our division is committed to providing comprehensive training to the next generation of leaders in pediatric pulmonary medicine.
Clinical Services
We have been leaders in diagnosing and treating children and adolescents with a wide range of respiratory conditions. We also expertise in lung diseases associated with premature birth, heart diseases (pulmonary hypertension), asthma, interstitial lung diseases, lung hypoplasia, complicated pneumonia, bronchiectasis, and sleep problem. In addition, we offer high levels of care for ventilator-dependent patients
Procedures & Examination in Pulmonology
1. Pulmonary function test: We perform multiple types of lung function tests for children and adolescents with various lung diseases. We have introduced impulse oscillometry (IOS) in our laboratory, which allows our physicians to evaluate lung functions in even younger children who are unable to perform traditional lung function tests.
2. Bronchoscopy: Our state-of-the-art flexible and rigid bronchoscopy technology allows physicians to visualize the vocal cords and airways abnormalities. Our experts also perform various bronchoscopic intervention procedures like laser therapies for laryngomalacia, subglottic hemangioma, and vacullar cyst, balloon dilatation for airway stenosis, and tracheo-bronchial stenting for airway-malacia and other airway obstructions. These procedures are performed at the pediatric bronchoscopy room or intensive care units.
3. Polysomnography: Pediatric polysomnography is indicated to evaluate infants and children with sleep problems, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, parasominas. It is also useful to evaluate underlying breathing disorders in children with neuromuscular disorders, central apnea, periodic breathing or central hypoventilation. In cooperation with our adult sleep medicine team, the sleep laboratory is able to perform multiple types of sleep study in patients aged more than four-year-old.
Medical Education
Our department provide complete two-years of pediatric pulmonary fellowship program as well as three-year combined programs for pediatric pulmonology-critical care medicine or pediatric pulmonology-sleep medicine. We train clerks, interns and pediatric residents at our hospital about common pediatric pulmonary diseases. Besides, we provide short-term international clinical observer ship for pediatric pulmonary specialists interested in interventional bronchoscopy from other countries.
